The surf race theme was based on a number of things. The Sydney to Hobart yacht race, Luke's leaving Melbourne to live in Launceston, the fact that, when he left home he could almost pack all his belongings into a wicker basket. But most of all it was about him making his own life choices and especially for having the confidence to stay true to the moral beliefs installed in him as a young boy. He had the courage of his convictions combined with the strength to always be kind.
